Forest Green Cable Cowl

Here’s a fun project that was knitted mostly in New York and finished in Florida. The process of making this was so pleasant, I’ll be referring back to this post anytime I need a gift idea!

This is a very simple 8 row cable repeat that quickly knits up in a worsted weight yarn on size 8 needles. The pattern calls for size 9, but I like how the cables are more defined with the smaller stitches. The yarn is a superwash Merino from Cece’s Wool in the colorway Emerald Isle.

The main needles are my tried and true stainless steel Chiagoos. So, I assumed that metal cable needles would also be my preference. Those buggers are too slippery! While a slick wool/metal interaction is perfect for most knitting applications, for cables, this is just a recipe for losing your needles and dropping your stitches. A cheap, plastic U-shaped cable needle from Clover ended up being the best tool for the job. I found the white needle from the pack linked below to be the best size for this project.

I ended up making the finished project just a bit too long. After blocking, the circumference of the scarf is 30”. I could have done with one or two less repeats of the main pattern. At this length, the scarf tends to flop over revealing the inside of the piece. Not to worry though, the inside is neat and clean. And one of the best parts of this cowl has been thrifting little hat pins and broaches to hold the extra length to the side and the pretty side out.
